Complete rules

From private cards to the final vote

Most players receive the same civilian word. One or more imposters receive a related but different word. Everyone gives clues, listens for inconsistencies, and votes to remove the most suspicious player.

This version runs the complete local game on one phone, so nobody needs to sit out as a permanent host or switch to a separate timer app.

1. Set up the round

  • Choose 3 to 12 players and 1 to 3 imposters.
  • Keep imposters below half of the total group.
  • Use a random pair or choose a theme before dealing cards.

2. Reveal private words

Pass the phone clockwise. Each player reveals one private card, memorizes the word, hides it, and hands the phone to the next person. Do not discuss clues until every player has finished.

3. Give clues and discuss

  • Describe the idea without saying the exact word.
  • Avoid clues so broad that they prove nothing.
  • Avoid clues so specific that they reveal the civilian word.
  • Use the discussion timer to keep the round moving.

4. Vote and eliminate

When discussion ends, select one active player as the table's vote target. If the target is a civilian, that player leaves the round and the words remain hidden. If an imposter is caught, the game checks whether another imposter remains.

How each team wins

  • Civilians win after every imposter has been eliminated.
  • Imposters win when all active civilians have been eliminated.
  • The final screen reveals every imposter and both secret words.

Recommended group settings

  • 3 to 6 players: use 1 imposter.
  • 7 to 10 players: use 1 or 2 imposters.
  • 11 to 12 players: use 2 or 3 imposters.
  • Use easy, medium-similarity words for a first game.

Frequently asked questions

How many people do you need for the Imposter Game?

You need at least three players. Four to eight usually gives everyone enough time to speak while still making the hidden role difficult to identify.

Does the imposter know they are the imposter?

In this version, the imposter receives a related but different word. They know their word but do not see the civilian word or the other hidden roles.

What happens after the group votes out a civilian?

The civilian is eliminated, the secret words stay hidden, and another discussion and vote begins. The final identity reveal waits until one team wins.

How do imposters win?

Imposters win when no active civilians remain. Civilians win when every imposter has been correctly eliminated.

Do you need a separate host?

No. The generator privately deals cards, runs discussion and voting timers, records eliminations, and reveals the final result on one shared phone.
